A Little Bit About Why We Made This Apple Butter…
This one’s for my mom — she just moved for the first time in twenty years, and her new backyard came with a few beautiful apple trees. When she asked me for apple recipes to use up her first big harvest, I knew exactly what to share. So, Mama, this one’s for you. I’m not sure if she remembers but her first ever “Big Girl Gift” she gave me for Christmas at 16 was a small 2-person crock pot. I still have it in my apartment in Vancouver. For this recipe, we used one from Target because I like to make a little bit more.
I’ve always loved the idea of a simmer pot — letting spices and fruit fill the house with warmth — but in practice? It always felt a little wasteful since you don’t actually get to eat it. This apple butter changed that for me. I put everything in the Crock Pot one afternoon, forgot about it completely, and by the time evening rolled around, the house smelled like fall had moved in… which is a hard ask when you live in California!
Homemade apple butter is one of those simple things that just feels good. You can spoon it over toast, swirl it into oatmeal, or tuck a few jars into your freezer for midwinter breakfasts. It’s a little ritual of slowing down — and a reminder that comfort doesn’t have to be complicated.
Is This Budget-Friendly?

Absolutely. All you need are a few pounds of apples, some basic spices, and a slow cooker. It’s a low-cost recipe that makes several jars of apple butter — perfect for sharing, gifting, or meal prepping. For about five dollars’ worth of apples, you’ll have weeks of cozy breakfasts ahead This bag of apples cost us 2.35 from Amazon groceries… and honestly? We forgot about them. This recipe was perfect for when the apples are looking a little uh– run down.
Why You’ll Love It
- No peeling required — the skins make it healthier and naturally thick. Doesn’t change the flavor!
- Hands-off recipe — your slow cooker does all the work.
- Perfectly spiced, rich, and glossy.
- Freezer-friendly and great for gifting.
- Smells like apple pie, tastes even better.
The Hidden Health Benefits of Keeping the Apple Skins
Most of the good stuff in apples actually lives in the skin. By keeping them on, you’re not only saving time — you’re keeping all the best nutrients in your apple butter:
- Fiber for fullness & gut health: Apple skins hold nearly half the fruit’s fiber, which supports digestion and keeps you satisfied.
- Antioxidants like quercetin: These compounds help fight inflammation and promote heart health.
- Extra vitamins: The skin adds small boosts of vitamin C, vitamin A, and potassium.
- Natural pectin: Helps thicken your apple butter naturally — no added thickeners needed!
So don’t peel those apples. You’ll get richer flavor, a silkier texture, and a healthier spoonful every time.
Ingredients

- 3 lbs apples, cubed (no need to peel)
- 1 cup brown sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- ⅛ teaspoon cloves
- ⅛ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
How to Make Crock Pot (Slow Cooker) Apple Butter

Add all the ingredients except the vanilla to your slow cooker and stir to coat.
Cover and cook on LOW for 10 hours, stirring once or twice if you’re home. You don’t need to, we don’t and it’s great every time!
When the apples are dark and soft, blend until smooth using an immersion blender (or carefully transfer to a regular one). Stir in the vanilla afterward — adding it at the end gives a deeper, more aromatic flavor.
Let it cool completely before spooning into jars. Store in the fridge for up to two weeks or freeze in cubes or jars for up to six months.
🕒 Cook time: 10 hours
🍎 Yields: About 3–4 cups

FAQ

How do you thicken apple butter?
If your apple butter feels too thin after blending, keep the lid slightly ajar and cook for another 30–60 minutes on low. The steam will escape and it’ll naturally thicken into that deep, spreadable consistency. You can also add a splash of lemon juice to help it reduce evenly. But for us? Just having the skin still on it worked great.
Can I use different kinds of apples?
Yes! A mix of tart and sweet apples (like Fuji, Honeycrisp, and Granny Smith) gives the best balance. Using just one kind will work too — your apple butter will simply take on that apple’s flavor profile.
Do I need to peel the apples?
No — that’s the best part! The skins break down completely and help the butter thicken naturally thanks to their pectin.
Can I make this with less sugar?
Absolutely. You can reduce the sugar to ½ cup or swap part of it for maple syrup or honey. The sweetness level is totally up to you.
What’s the difference between apple butter and applesauce?
Apple butter is cooked longer and caramelized, giving it a deep brown color and jam-like texture. Applesauce is lighter, looser, and not as concentrated in flavor.
How to Store It
Refrigerate for up to two weeks in sealed jars, or freeze for up to six months. It’s also the perfect edible gift — pour it into small jars, add a ribbon, and tuck a cinnamon stick on top for a festive touch.
